Benefits of Vitamin D supplementation in Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

An article I read today titled Vitamin D Shows Promise for Inflammatory Bowel Disease published by FX Medicine explores the benefits of increasing serum vitamin D levels in patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). Inflammatory Bowel Disease refers to conditions including Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis.

Though this study is only small important treatment objectives should be considered for clients with IBD. Vitamin D levels are usually low in individuals with IBD due to the vital function of the small intestine converting vitamin D into its active form, cholcalciferol. If the intestine is damaged it cannot absorb or convert vitamin D.

Individuals with IBD are often prescribed corticosteroids to stabilise their condition. Corticosteriods increase the body's requirement for vitamin D.

With low levels of vitamin D, individuals with IBD will suffer a range of comorbidities such as osteoporosis, depression and impaired immunity.

My personal view is that vitamin D holds a standard place in prescribing supplements for those suffering with Inflammatory Bowel Disease.
